TPU Professor Named in Top 3 Best Young Teachers in Russia

Sergey Turanov, associate professor at the Division for Materials Science of the TPU School of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, was placed third in the finals of the All-Russian Innovation Competition of the National Rating & Certification Agency RosRating "Best Young Teacher 20.23".

The finals of the competition were held in Moscow the other day. The project aims to develop and implement innovative educational technologies for young schoolteachers and teachers, associate and full professors at universities in Russia in educational and training processes.

"The competition was held in two stages. The first in absentia stage included several competitive tasks, such as a self-presentation on the topic "My profession: Teacher", a short presentation of an innovative educational technology, and a description of innovative approaches practiced in teaching," says Sergey Turanov.

The final task of the competition was a 20-minute master class for students, where teachers had to show innovative educational approaches, cover the topic and communicate it to the audience, use their unique teaching methods to present material and interact with the audience. The public speaking culture was also assessed.

It was really challenging because the contestants did not know what kind of audience they would face: be it lawyers, mathematicians, physicists, etc. I, for example, had first-year economics students majoring in information security. I asked my students and it appeared that they had not studied physics since high school and had not heard anything at all about optics. So, I had to adapt the material off the cuff. I explained and showed them how to assemble self-made optical instruments using improvised means, such as a telescope and a camera, — the contestant said.

As a result, Sergey Turanov took third place in "Best Young University Teacher" category. The winners were awarded letters of gratitude from the State Duma Committee for Education, diplomas from RosRating, and valuable prizes from the competition partners.
