05.04.06 Ecology and Environmental Management
Irrational use of resources, widespread waste disposal, air, water, soil pollution, and deforestation are some of the environmental problems caused by human activities. Production companies and organizations are obliged to take actions to protect the environment. An environmental engineer is responsible for their implementation.
The Environmental Engineering in Mineral Resource Sector program teaches not just ecology, but geoecology so that students understand in detail how natural mechanisms are arranged and connected. Students are immersed in environmental protection sphere: they study air and water purification options, waste management, industrial environmental control, monitoring, and design.
Key competencies
- Conduct environmental audits of companies in various industries
-
Develop environmental expertise projects
-
Participate in assessment and control of the state of natural environment components
-
Organize environmental protection activities at enterprises using modern software: Ecology. 1C-KSU: Environmental Protection and Ecologist
-
Conduct scientific research in the field of ecology, nature protection and other environmental sciences
-
Develop actions to minimize the negative impact of anthropogenic activities
What are the training and internship like?
During the first and second years, students study basic subjects and acquire basic knowledge of ecology, mineralogy and geology. Subsequent courses teach specialized subjects necessary for the future profession.
Learning is not limited to classroom lectures. Our students:
Explore Tomsk and its surroundings with geologists - Lagerniy Sad, Babiy Gorge behind the Polytechnic stadium, Stepanovka quarry, Tom River near the Communal Bridge, Khromovsky Gorge.
Make reports and interactive maps
Visit the companies offices and get acquainted with the work of environmental engineers.
Travel along many routes as part of a month-long summer expedition in Khakassia at TPU's testing ground.
Each student will have the opportunity to complete an internship at companies in Moscow, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok, the Republic of Buryatia, Bashkortostan and Khakassia, Tomsk, Seversk, as well as Tomsk, Kemerovo, Sverdlovsk Region and the Krasnodar Krai.
Equipment
Practical assignments are delivered using the latest equipment in the laboratories and research and education centers of the School Earth Sciences and Engineering.
These instruments and facilities help students:
Study the material and chemical composition of natural environment components (mercury analyzer, gamma spectrometers, X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, optical microscopes);
Determine chemical, microbiological, gas composition and toxicity of natural water, sources of centralized and non-centralized domestic and drinking water supply, as well as flooding of oil reservoirs, soils, bottom sediments, products of secondary mineral formation;
Conduct instrumental neutron activation analysis (IRT-T nuclear reactor).
