13.03.01 Heat Power and Heating Engineering
Energy is the circulatory system of any enterprise or state as well as one of the key sectors of the economy. Power engineers convert fuel into different types of energy and know where and how to use it. It's the power engineer's job to heat a house or a whole city, design a thermal power plant or create a new type of eco-fuel.
Heat Power and Heating Engineering is one of the oldest educational tracks not only at Tomsk Polytechnic University, but also in Siberia as a whole. The high-quality education is evidenced by the RAEX subject ranking: TPU ranks first in Power and Electrical Engineering.
The School of Energy & Power Engineering has been producing specialists in this field for over 120 years, from fundamental specialists (heat physicists) to those who operate, design and maintain individual facilities and entire energy systems. Students master core disciplines related to heat engineering, thermal physics, and learn about heat carriers and their types, basic physical processes.
Graduates of the Thermal and Nuclear Power Engineering and Management Program are competent managers in the field of power engineering. They can not only develop, design, assemble, operate and modernize heat power facilities, but also manage them with due regard to economic, environmental and social factors.
In the first two years, students master the core part of the program. Starting from the third year, they choose one of five majors to specialize in.
Heat power plants
In the last few years, Russia has made efforts to ensure energy security of its regions and to create autonomous heat supply systems. Heat power engineers are sought after at heat and nuclear power plants, in energy, industrial, and engineering companies, research and design institutes, and heat supply organizations.
Graduates can pursue Master's studies after completing their Bachelor's degree.
Industrial Heat Power Engineering
This major deals with learning how to improve the efficiency of heat and power plants, design engineering and thermal calculations of heat and mass transfer equipment of TPPs, boiler houses, buildings and structures. Graduates are equipped with practical skills in calculations and operation of heat supply, gas supply, water supply, cold supply, heating, ventilation, hot water supply and air conditioning systems.
Automation of technological processes and operations in heat power and heat engineering
Graduates of this program are engineering specialists for power and oil and gas industry specializing in automation of technological processes, including generation, conversion, transportation of heat power and heat carriers. The program aims to provide fundamental knowledge in automated control, practical skills to draw up a complete set of project design documentation for automated process control systems, including the selection of equipment, software and hardware. The key employment areas of our bachelor's degree graduates are design, operation, installation and commissioning activities, mainly at power engineering enterprises.
Heat generating equipment for heat and nuclear power industry
This major is designed to produce highly qualified staff for the enterprises designing and manufacturing hot-water and steam boilers, steam generators and heat-exchange equipment. Graduates are highly sought after by both major corporations and small design institutions.
Gas compressor station equipment
Graduates of this program are highly qualified personnel employed by enterprises designing and manufacturing gas compressor equipment and transporting natural gas through main gas pipelines. Gazprom places high expectations on the graduates, as the number of gas compressor stations is expected to increase significantly in the future.
