18.03.01 Chemical Technology
Chemical engineers design and operate equipment and processes for the production of petrochemical and fuel products.
At Tomsk Polytechnic University, such engineers are trained in the chemical technology program, which emerged more than 100 years ago thanks to the support of the prominent scientist Dmitry Mendeleev. Today, TPU tops the RAEX ranking in Chemical Engineering among other Russian universities.
The bachelor's program Petroleum Refining & Petrochemical Technology will make you the chemist of the future. We teach modern professions such as digital technologist, BIM-designer, R&D-specialist, and techwriter. Equipped with exceptional knowledge and skills, our graduates create valuable and unique chemical products and materials.
Key competencies
Technology:
-
production process management – digital twin operation, site and personnel management;
-
improvement of chemical and technological processes – identification of process weaknesses, product quality improvement and cost reduction;
-
introduction of new technologies – resource optimization, management system improvement, and automation of operations.
Project:
-
new technology and materials engineering – greenfield production;
-
modeling of chemical processes – digital twin creation;
-
design of modern equipment – calculation of the size and number of machines, design selection.
Research:
-
synthesis of new chemicals – compounds with specified properties;
-
study of product and material properties – quality and composition assessment;
-
analysis of technological process patterns – assessment of production reserves and ways to scale up production capacity.
Learning format
In the first two years, students follow the general curriculum, with further distribution into majors: Petroleum Engineering and Refining Technology, Petrochemical and Polymer Materials Technology and Digital Refining (full-time only).
Program faculty are researchers and practitioners who work closely with each student:
-
within a research team – students engage in basic and applied research together with scientists;
-
together with mentors in the program One Day with a Production Technologist – professionals with industrial experience guide our students, share their experience, give recommendations and feedback.
We also offer:
in-depth study of English – with a TPU certificate you can take part in academic exchange programs and seek employment in international companies;
simultaneous additional major – development of digital skills and competencies;
graduation thesis defense in the form of a startup – immersion in entrepreneurship and attracting investments for your project (development).

Facilities and resources
A career path begins with practical training.
Our students take the first steps into their career at the university through:
-
vocational training as an operator, equipment operator or laboratory technician
-
paid internships and practical training
-
work placements during their studies or upon graduation
The geography of partner companies offering internships is extensive: petrochemical plants, refineries, chemical enterprises, R&D organizations, design institutes.
After their bachelor's degree, students can continue their studies and enter a master's program or find a job in a company. We support our graduates during the employment stage and afterwards for another year.
Alumni
Our graduates work in chemical and petrochemical companies. The knowledge gained at the university and their strategic thinking skills ensure that they feel secure in the labor market.
"Working at the plant is interesting. It has opened up a lot of opportunities for my personal and career growth. The work requires good fundamental knowledge in the area, high level of commitment, motivation to achieve goals and constant professional growth", – Igor Zanin, head of the complex (shop) for production of high-octane gasoline components at KINEF, 2009 graduate.
"I always strived not just to do my work and go home, but to delve into the process and enjoy what I was doing. I liked to observe how additives and polymers were blended, how the properties of the obtained compositions changed, and what conditions led to the desired result. And it is still interesting to track the developments from raw materials to the finished product. I like my work and what is going on around me. I realize that there is room for further development, and that makes me happy," – Nikolay Bauman, SIBUR Holding Product and Technology Development Manager, 2007 graduate.
"Do not dream, set goals. I used to be a senior equipment operator at the production plant, acting as a process engineer as well. I switched to the raw technology and became an expert in real-time plant economic assessment. I offer real technology solutions geared towards a set target," – Alexander Shkarin, chief pyrolysis expert at SIBUR's Digital Department, 2016 graduate.
"Further development as a technically competent industrial professional depends on how motivated and involved the student is in his/her learning process. Along with acquiring basic fundamental knowledge, I advise students to focus on self-education, study other related fields, and master the skill of practical use of information. The knowledge acquired at TPU, mindfulness, responsibility, perseverance, interest in new things - all these qualities will contribute to becoming a competent engineer, a high-level professional", – Olga Reshetnikova, head of the Petroleum Facilities Engineering Department of TomskNIPIneft, 2003 graduate.
"The knowledge acquired at the university has become a reliable support for my operational and R&D activities. This is the pillar that enables me to constantly develop and fulfill myself in many areas of the fuel and chemical industry," – Vitaly Barabyshkin, head of the engineering and design product development project at Gazpromneft STC, 2005 graduate.
